FAQs

Eighteenth-century cylinder wine bottles evolved from mallet shapes as commercial wine production required bottles that could be binned horizontally for long-term storage and ageing.

These vessels were hand-blown using dark olive-green or amber glass, often referred to as black glass, which protected the contents from light damage.

Authentic pieces typically feature a deep kick-up or pushed-in base, a hand-applied string rim below the lip, and characteristic surface wear with iridescence or patination from burial or prolonged storage.

Displaying antique glass bottles on open shelving, mantelpieces, or as single-stem bud vases introduces historical texture and earthy tones into contemporary or traditional spaces.

Antique glass should be cleaned gently with lukewarm water and a mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that might damage the fragile exterior patination.
