Georgian Longcase Clock, Female Maker, Five Pillar Movement

18th century
Sold by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is proud to offer this excellent and very well proportioned Eleanor Harvey of Brentwood longcase clock for sale. Dating from 1772 this Georgian oak case is typical of the clockmakers of the time, with reeded column supports to the hood set beneath a swan neck pediment. The plain oak case with lovely patina is a gorgeous colour with a long trunk door, brass escutcheon to the working lock and a plain base standing on bracket feet. The hood has oak pillars finished with brass capitals, mahogany crossbanding and a swan neck top complete with original paterae. The swan neck top is surmounted by three brass ball and spire finials.

The eight day, five pillar, rack-striking anchor escapement movement has just been serviced and strikes the hours on a very pleasing bell. The restored 12 inch arched brass dial has a matted centre and silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and date wheel (all working) and cast spandrels to each corner and within the arch. There is a silvered cartouche within the dial displaying the maker's name and town. The arch has a working strike/silent dial, normally found on London clocks only, and the clock comes with my three year guarantee. Five pillar clock movements are predominantly a sign of a high quality piece and this clock, standing at 7 feet 3.5 inches tall, is exactly that.

Made in 1772 (thanks to Brian Loomes for the details) by Eleanor Harvey of Brentwood she remains one of the very few female clockmakers and probably the only one to have qualified in her own right, rather than inheriting her husband’s business. As such this is an important clock in the history of horology.

Delivery is available, please enquire for details.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
