This nineteenth-century Victorian Gothic open bookcase uses solid oak timber finished in a warm brown tone. The piece has four tiers of open shelving set between tapered uprights, with a top gallery featuring a pierced cut-out motif and circular handle detail. It shows minor historic knocks, marks, wear, imperfections, repairs, and alterations from long practical use. The overall dimensions measure 75 cm wide by 19 cm deep by 107 cm high. Position this display cabinet in a living room, hallway, or study to organise books, ornaments, or decorative items within easy reach. The compact footprint fits neatly against a wall or in a narrow alcove while maintaining a sturdy presence. Solid construction with firm joints provides reliable stability for daily use throughout the home. The rich wood grain texture and historic character bring period style to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

FAQs

Victorian Gothic Revival furniture is defined by medieval-inspired elements, such as pointed arches, trefoil cutouts, carved tracery, and robust construction utilizing dark native hardwoods like oak and walnut.

Solid hardwoods, particularly English oak, mahogany, and walnut, were the primary materials used. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques, including dovetail joints, mortise and tenon frames, and hand-cut timber backs.

Authentic period pieces show signs of genuine age including uneven patination, natural oxidation around brass fittings or joint lines, hand-planed backboards, and distinct saw marks consistent with historic timber conversion.

Position the piece as an accent focal point by pairing historic leather-bound books with modern ceramic vessels, contemporary framed prints, and minimalist decorative objects to balance traditional timber tones.

Dust the timber regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to feed the wood grain, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct proximity to heat radiators.
