Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dwarf bookcase is a low-height shelving unit designed to store literature below eye level, keeping the upper wall free for artwork, mirrors, or panelling. Popularised during the 19th century, these low open bookcases were frequently used in libraries, drawing rooms, and hallways.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, which are then treated with an ebonising stain or iron sulphate solution to darken the timber. Hand-carved decorations, such as foliate stiles or mythological masks, are carved directly into the solid wood before or after the ebonising process.

Authentic 19th-century ebonised bookcases display natural wear where the dark finish softened on high-touch points, revealing the underlying wood grain beneath. Look for hand-cut joinery, solid timber backboards, adjustable shelf mechanisms like wooden sawtooth supports or brass studs, and hand-carved decorative motifs.

Position the piece along a main wall or beneath a window to anchor the space while maintaining sightlines. Contrast the dark, ebonised finish with lighter ceramic decorative items or framed art mounted directly above the top surface.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth to clean carved details without scratching the finish. Apply a neutral microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the timber, avoiding harsh chemical sprays or water that could strip the original dark stain.
