Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This primitive shepherds coffer from 1890 embodies 19th-century folk art with a rustic farmhouse aesthetic. The piece comprises a solid pine plank construction finished with a polychrome painted surface in vibrant shades of blue and yellow. Concentric circle carvings and geometric motifs decorate the front panel, complemented by a natural timber hinged top that overhangs the base. Straight block legs support the structure, showing visible surface wear and age patination consistent with its vernacular origins. Measuring 51 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, the coffer provides compact proportions for practical use in a variety of living spaces. In a contemporary home, this painted blanket box serves as functional storage while adding character and colour to a hallway, bedroom, or living area. The durable wooden top offers a convenient surface for display, while the interior accommodates blankets, linens, or household items. Collectors of traditional country furniture will appreciate the authentic decorative finish and straightforward joinery, making the box a versatile accent piece for rustic or eclectic interiors.

FAQs

A primitive shepherds coffer is a utilitarian wooden chest historically used in rural farming communities for storage, often decorated with hand-carved folk motifs and colourful painted finishes.

These coffers were typically crafted from local softwoods such as pine using plank construction, decorated with geometric carvings using basic woodworking tools, and finished with natural mineral pigments.

Authentic examples display hand-carved geometric details with subtle irregularities, natural paint wear concentrated along edges, historical hardware, and hand-planed timber boards on the reverse.

A painted primitive coffer functions as a statement storage piece when positioned in an entryway, placed at the foot of a bed, or styled as a central low coffee table.

Position the timber away from direct heat sources and moisture, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and avoid chemical solvents that could strip original paint layers.
