Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century pine mule chest is presented in a warm amber colour with original paint and later hand-painted fruit and leaf motifs on the upper corners and lower drawer fronts. The piece features a hinged lid, a keyhole escutcheon on the upper body and drawer facings, two lower drawers fitted with swan-neck brass handles, and bracket feet, all showing visible surface wear. Visible details include grain patterns across the timber and aged patination on the brass hardware. Measuring 66 cm high, 93 cm wide and 54 cm deep, it provides practical storage space for a hallway, bedroom or living area while serving as a traditional folk art accent piece.

FAQs

A mule chest is a traditional storage vessel featuring a top hinged lid coffer section above one or two bottom drawers, historically designed for storing household linens and blankets.

These storage pieces were commonly crafted from regional softwoods such as pine, or hardwoods like oak, often featuring brass drop handles and hand-painted decorative finishes.

Authentic examples typically display hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, natural surface wear to the original paintwork, and period-correct iron or brass hardware.

Positioned at the foot of a bed, in an entryway, or as a functional storage element in a living room, a painted coffer provides historical character and contrast within modern interiors.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth, avoid solvent-based cleaners that can erode original paintwork, and position the piece away from direct radiator heat to prevent timber shrinkage.
