Description

A gorgeous pair of early Victorian cut glass rinsers. Rinsers or coolers were used for chilling or rinsing wine glasses at the table, between courses. One per person would be placed on the table, facilitating the repeated use of the same glass for different wines.

Later it became more common to have a different glass for each wine. Although it's original use is no longer relevant, the rinser can be a lovely collector's item and has a practical use as a bowl. These beautiful examples have facet cutting to the sides, star cut bases and a band of hobnail cut decoration.

Victorian cut glass rinsers were used during formal 19th-century dining to clean wine glasses between courses, often featuring spouts or fluted rims designed to hold the stem of the glass.

They were typically crafted from lead crystal or heavy flint glass, shaped using free-blowing or mold-pressing techniques, and finished with hand-cut geometric facets.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic signs of age such as pontil marks on the base, minor surface wear, and a high lead content that produces a resonant ring when struck.

These decorative vessels can be displayed on open shelving, used as catch-alls on a sideboard, or utilised to hold small botanical stems on a coffee table.

Wash them gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or sudden temperature changes to protect the fragile crystal structure.
