Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1880s.

The eight-day movement retains its good original platform lever escapement and strikes hours and half-hours on a gong and repeats hours at will via the upper button to the front. Perfect enamel dial and original blued steel ‘spade’ hands. It is signed with the Jacot trademark to the backplate. Just over 7ins (18cms) high with handle raised. Guaranteed for at least two years.

A “jacot” is French for a parrot, or “pretty polly”. Hence the use by Henri Jacot of the trademark of a parrot on a stand bracketed by the initials “H” and “J” which can be seen on the image of the backplate.
