Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in Britain following the introduction of the anchor escapement in the late seventeenth century, allowing for longer pendulums and narrower weights.

These clocks are traditionally constructed from dense cabinet timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing intricate brass or iron gear trains within fitted wooden cases.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-painted or brass engraved dials bearing maker signatures, traditional dovetail joinery in the trunk construction, and period-correct mechanical movements with weight drives.

A tall floor clock acts as a strong vertical architectural element, pairing well in traditional hallways or contrasting effectively against minimalist neutral walls to add warmth and character.

Maintain stable ambient temperatures away from direct sunlight and dampness, ensure the clock is placed on a completely level surface, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
