Cleret of Paris 'Pendule Portative' Mantel Clock

19th century
Description

A classic silk suspension 'pendule portative' as they are known in France,or mantel clock by Cleret of Paris, slightly smaller than average, standing only 19cm to the top of the case. Made from oak, rosewood and with boxwood inlays to border the front and side panels, a finely carved ripple edge moulding surrounding the dial, and is surmounted by an ornate cast brass carrying handle. The dial itself is enamel and is in great condition, signed 'Cleret à Paris', with Roman numerals and protective brass winding hole collets, and a pair of fine 'quatrefoil' hands. To the top of the clock there is a small wooden knob which is used to slide the glass panel upwards and out of the way for winding and adjusting, and there is also a small glass aperature to the top panel for viewing the movement. The rear panel is removed with a similarly styled knob, and is lined with green baize to keep dust out. It also has a small fabric-covered cutout, to allow for clearer travel of the bell sound, which strikes on the hour and half hour. Mid 19th century. Sold with 24 month guarantee.
