17th Century Welsh Oak Coffer

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Havard and Havard

A Welsh oak coffer of appealing, spare design and distinctive “clamped” construction where the substantial legs form the corner posts and the boarded sides and base are then rebated into them. (In this instance, the boards are all constructed from single-piece planks of oak, including the moulded edge lid). This form of construction is associated with Breconshire and Radnorshire and often described as being of “Black Mountains-type”. The original wooden strut hinges have, at some point, been replaced by the current metal ones.

Probably Breconshire/Radnorshire circa 1650-1700.
