Grand Sonnerie Moser Carriage Clock with Date Work Engraved Platform 1850s

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale an a1850s French striking and repeating Grand sonnerie with date work and alarm carriage clock made in France by the maker Moser which is signed by him on the back of the rear plate of the movement, the clock case has been fully restored the movement has also been fully restored with new springs added and is running strong keeping time and striking correctly with the repeat button on the top all running via the original again restored silvered platform.

Again this clock was restored by Peter Bonnett before his sad passing, Peter did tell me the engraving on the platform has a hidden message or story and is a very rare clock.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny gilt brass and stands 19cm high x 12cm wide with a depth of 10cm it is in original condition with a thick 5mm beveled front/back door and top viewing glass again all in mint condition.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

At the base is the lever for silent or quarters or grand Sonnerie all working correctly.

The Dial

The dial is in mint original condition in white porcelain with Roman numerals; the clock also retains its original very fine black hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strike which strikes the hours, quarters and halves and three quarters via two blue steel gongs to the rear also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been fully restored and running and striking 100% correctly.

This clock also has a fully functional alarm and date work.

The clock also contains Genre stop work to stop over winding a top-quality feature only found on top-end clocks.

At the bottom of the case is a lever for full striking or just hour striking or Silent so you have all three options.

The photos do not do justice to this lovely old clock.

As with all my clocks, this one is sold with a ‘back-to-base’ 3-month guarantee. I also offer future clock servicing, which I carry out personally at a heavily discounted rate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the early 19th century, a carriage clock is a compact, spring-driven timekeeper designed for travel, featuring a grande sonnerie mechanism that strikes both the quarter and full hours automatically on every quarter.

These timepieces typically feature cast gilt brass or gilded bronze cases, bevelled glass panels, white enamel dials, and intricate spring-driven mechanical movements with lever escapements.

Authentic examples feature substantial gilt brass casing, hand-painted enamel dials with precise Roman numerals, fine balance escapements visible through top glass windows, and maker stamps or serial numbers on the rear movement plate.

A gilded carriage clock functions as an ornate focal accent when positioned on a mantelpiece, executive office desk, or dark wood bookshelf alongside minimalist modern decor.

Dust the gilded exterior gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth without liquid chemical polishes, and ensure the internal mechanical movement is professionally cleaned and oiled by a horologist every five years.
