Hutton Edinburgh, Mahogany Regulator / Long Case / Grandfather Clock C. 1860

19th century
Description

A fine quality flame mahogany 8 day regulator longcase clock by John Hutton of Edinburgh, circa 1860.

The beautifully proportioned mahogany veneered case of typical Edinburgh architectural top design. The glazed trunk door with flame mahogany veneered backboard to the interior highlighting the weight and pendulum. The beautifully flame mahogany figured box base with a skirted plinth.

The original brass lock and brass hinges to the trunk door.

A very fine clock case of small proportions, with an excellent patination and colour.

The circular engraved silvered brass dial with outer minute track and subsidiary dials for the Roman hours and Arabic seconds. (Observatory markings), signed to the dial centre Hutton, Edinburgh. Surrounded by a heavy polished brass sighting ring.

The high quality fully restored weight-driven eight day movement with substantial and thick shouldered plates united by six heavy turned pillars, secured by twelve heavy blued steel screws and collets.

The wheel work of the finest quality with six spoke crossings, high count pinions, deadbeat escapement and Harrison's maintaining power.

The movement is fully restored by our horologist who works exclusively for us.

Our horologist is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 35 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the 1977 Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal.

Blued steel hands.

John Pears Hutton - Watchmaker and goldsmith, 21 Hanover Street Edinburgh and 343 Princess Street. Lived at 39 Montague Street.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
