FAQs

Silver christening sets gained immense popularity during the Georgian and Victorian periods, continuing strongly into the George V era as traditional heirloom gifts given to newborns by godparents to wish them lifelong prosperity.

These items are traditionally crafted from sterling silver, often featuring gilt interiors on spoons or cups, and housed in custom-fitted presentation boxes lined with silk or velvet.

Authenticity is verified by checking for official British assay office hallmarks, which include the makers mark, standard sterling silver lion passant, the city mark (such as the anchor for Birmingham), and the date letter corresponding to the specific year.

These sets can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on bookshelves, or as part of a curated tablescape to add a touch of historic craftsmanship and reflective metallic texture to a room.

Antique silver should be handled with clean cotton gloves to avoid skin oils, stored in tarnish-resistant cloths or fitted boxes, and cleaned infrequently using specialized non-abrasive silver polish to protect the patina.
