This tall oak table lamp dates from 1920 in a Baroque Revival style. The piece presents a warm brown matt finish with visible wood grain, featuring a hand-carved putto figure standing on an orb pedestal, supporting a fluted stem above a moulded circular base and topped with a white fabric shade with a blue trim. A brass lampholder sits atop the wooden stem, secured with a small metal fixing, while a twisted brown fabric-covered electrical flex extends from the base. It measures 58 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 21 cm deep. Placement suits a gentleman's library or study desk, sitting attractively upon a sideboard top to provide functional task or ambient lighting. The sculptural carved figure and turned elements create a striking decorative focal point in traditional interiors, blending utility with ornamental craftsmanship.

Cherub or putto motifs originate in Classical antiquity and were re-introduced during the Italian Renaissance. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, manufacturers and woodcarvers frequently integrated these classical winged figures into decorative interior lighting fixtures, particularly in Baroque Revival and Rococo styles.

Traditional figurative table lamps were typically carved from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. The carved wood components were mounted onto weighted bases and fitted with brass or copper electrical conduits and lamp holders.

Authentic hand-carved wooden lamps feature subtle asymmetrical gouge marks, natural grain variations, and hand-tooled detailing around features like hair and drapery. Machine-moulded or cast resin reproductions exhibit uniform textures, visible seam lines, and lack the depth of genuine timber carving.

Carved wooden lighting serves as an accent piece when placed on a minimalist sideboard, console table, or writing desk. Combining the organic texture of dark oak with modern neutral lampshades creates a balanced contrast within contemporary or eclectic interior schemes.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth preserves the finish. Beeswax polish applied sparingly along the wood grain helps maintain moisture and patination, while electrical wiring should be periodically inspected and tested by a qualified electrician to ensure modern safety compliance.
