J Dixon & Sons - founded 1806 in Sheffield, was one of the major British manufacturers in the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century.

They were the best-known manufacturer of Britannia metal, and also the world leader in manufacturing shooting accessories till the late Victorian era. They produced a variety of other items: from precision tools to aircraft propellors. They were particularly famous whistle makers, known for their outstanding quality. They were one of the 4 great whistle makers, the others being W Dowler & Sons, J Stevens & Son & T Yates.

Their shop was located first at Silver Street (1806), Cornish Place (1822) Sheffield .

Their registered trade mark since 1879 was a Trumpet with a Banner hanging from it. Although registered in 1879, the "Trumpet with Banner" logo was used for many years before registration and appears on many of their silver plate pieces. Besides whistles, they were one of the foremost names in silver plate and sterling tableware including silver tea services and hollowware pieces. They also made silver ware serving pieces and had a wide catalogue of patterns. Their tea sets and hollowware pieces are very valuable as antiques.

In 1915 the company sold its stock to an Italian Company and ceased manufacturing shooting accessories.

The firm continued to be a family run enterprise until 1976. Since 1976 The company was purchased and was in an American ownership.

This nineteenth-century Victorian silver-plated fruit basket is made by James Dixon and displays a silver colour with a metal finish. The shaped oval basket includes a gadrooned scalloped rim, pierced floral repousse ornamentation, a vertical hinged swing handle with detailed engraving, and four small bun feet underneath. Measuring 19 cm high, 26 cm wide and 21 cm deep, the piece remains in excellent condition with clear decorative detailing visible across the body and handle. In a modern home, it serves as a decorative fruit basket placed on a dining table centre or sideboard. The item brings traditional English country house style to a dining room or living space, holding fruit or decorative items while functioning as a collectible display piece of nineteenth-century metalwork.

Popularised in the nineteenth century, these decorative hollowware vessels were crafted using electroplating technology to offer intricate metalwork, swing handles, and repousse detailing as accessible dining room centrepieces.

Most were constructed from base metals such as nickel silver or copper, electroplated with fine silver, and finished with hand-chased, pierced, or die-stamped ornamentation alongside a hinged swing handle.

Look for stamped makers marks on the underside, such as the bugle mark or initials JD & S, alongside Victorian electroplate quality designations like EPNS.

Position the piece centrally on a dining table, sideboard, or kitchen island, left unpolished to display natural patina or styled with seasonal botanical displays.

Wash with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly, applying a non-abrasive silver polish sparingly with a soft cloth to avoid wearing down the electroplated layer.
