Campaign trunks were utilised by military officers and travellers during the 18th and 19th centuries to transport personal belongings easily across long distances, often featuring robust construction to withstand arduous journeys.

These pieces typically incorporate foundational woods such as camphor or pine, which are frequently clad in leather, canvas, or hide, and accented with brass hardware, locks, and studding for durability.

Authentic period trunks exhibit hand-beaten brass tacks, period-specific lock mechanisms, dovetail joinery where visible, and natural ageing of the materials such as patina on the leather and oxidation on the metal.

An antique trunk functions effectively as a coffee table in a living room or at the foot of a bed, providing both a focal design element and concealed storage for blankets and linens.

Leather should be treated periodically with specialist museum-grade wax to prevent drying, while brass components can be gently cleaned with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina.
