Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian golden oak secretaire bookcase stands 228.5 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. The piece dates from 1890 and follows a gentleman's library design, finished in a warm brown timber with glass glazing and brass hardware. A heavy moulded cornice sits atop twin glazed upper doors enclosing internal shelves. The middle section contains a pull-out carved drawer with a fall-down front, brass drop handles, and decorative floral and leaf carvings. Below this, twin lower cupboard doors display recessed panels with carved urn and floral motifs. In a contemporary home, this large storage unit suits a study, home office, or living room for displaying books and organising papers. The sturdy construction rests on a plinth base and includes locking keys for both upper and lower compartments. The timber shows natural grain variations, while the hardware includes ornate brass drop pulls alongside intricate woodcarvings across the drawer and cabinet fronts.

FAQs

An Edwardian secretaire bookcase is a multi-functional piece of furniture crafted between 1901 and 1910, combining a glazed upper bookcase with a pull-down writing desk or secretaire drawer and lower storage cupboards.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring hand-carved decorative panels, glass panelling, and solid brass drop handles or bail handles.

Authentic Edwardian examples typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass locks and hardware, natural age-related wear, and specific stylistic elements like carved floral or urn motifs and moulded cornices.

Position the piece in a study, library, or living room as a focal point, pairing the dark oak tone with neutral wall shades, modern lighting, and curated book collections displayed on the shelves.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying or split timber. Clean surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to preserve the oak and its patination.
