This Edwardian spirit kettle on a stand dates from 1910 in the English Country House style. The piece uses silver plate and dark ebony materials, showing a bright silver colour with contrasting black elements on the overhead handle and lid finial. Notable details include a fluted lower body, reeded decoration, a shaped spout, a lift-up lid, an original burner, and a tripod stand raised on reeded paw feet with a hanging chain. The size is 33 cm high, 23.5 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this kettle sits on a sideboard top or display surface as a decorative period accent. It brings traditional Edwardian hospitality and silverware craftsmanship into a dining room, living room, or hallway setting. The functional stand and burner complete the historical tea service assembly, offering an authentic antique focal point for traditional interiors.

FAQs

A spirit kettle is a table-top hot water vessel mounted on a fitted stand containing a spirit burner. Popular from the eighteenth century through the Edwardian period, it was used during afternoon tea service to refill teapots with hot water without requiring trips to the kitchen.

Spirit kettles were commonly crafted from electroplated nickel silver, sterling silver, brass, or copper. Handles and lid finials were frequently fitted with non-conductive materials such as ebony, bone, or vulcanite to prevent heat transfer to the user.

Solid silver pieces will bear official hallmarks indicating the silver purity, city assay mark, makers mark, and date letter. Silver-plated pieces generally feature maker name stamps, epns marks, or trade logos rather than full official assay hallmarks.

An antique spirit kettle functions effectively as a decorative tabletop object on a dining room sideboard, dresser, or kitchen island. Displaying it alongside contemporary glassware or ceramic serving pieces creates a balanced visual contrast.

Clean silver-plated items using a non-abrasive silver foam or polish applied with a soft cotton cloth to avoid wearing down the silver layer. Ensure all moisture is dried thoroughly after cleaning and avoid submerging wooden or ebony handles in water.
