This 19th-century Georgian bookcase is made from dark brown mahogany, glass, and brass in the gentleman's library style. The upper section displays a dentil cornice above a pair of tall doors featuring intricate astragal glazing patterns, enclosing adjustable shelves. Below the low-waisted frieze, which conceals a pair of sliding trays, sit twin lower doors detailed with striking flame mahogany panels, applied mouldings, and simple wooden framing, resting on a sturdy plinth base. The interior holds rows of vertical books visible through the clear glass, while the polished timber surfaces show warm grain highlights under bright light. Practical and substantial, the unit stands 252 cm high, 191 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this traditional display cabinet serves as an imposing storage and showcase piece in a home study, executive office, or formal sitting room for organising collections of books and decorative objects. The lower closed cupboards provide concealed storage for items that require tidying away, while the upper glass-fronted shelves offer a protective yet visible display area. The classical lines and rich timber tones integrate smoothly into traditional or transitional library schemes, adding architectural presence and functional workspace storage to a large room.

Georgian bookcases are defined by classical proportions, symmetry, fine mahogany timber, and geometric astragal glazing patterns on the cabinet doors.

Primary woods included imported mahogany or walnut, while secondary construction typically utilised pine or oak alongside hand-drawn float glass and brass fittings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, slight imperfections in the hand-blown glass panes, original cast brass hardware, and timber patination consistent with age.

Position the piece as a focal point in a dining room or home office, combining books with ceramic objects or glassware to create visual balance against contemporary decor.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply beeswax lightly once or twice a year, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources.
