Claret jugs became prominent during the Victorian era, specifically designed for serving red wine at the dining table following the removal of the cloth.

Authentic period claret jugs typically combine blown or cut crystal glass bodies with mounts made from silver gilt, sterling silver, or electroplated nickel silver.

Authenticity is verified through hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, makers mark, and date letter, alongside the characteristic warm tone of genuine gold plating over silver.

Display the piece on a sideboard or within a glass-fronted cabinet to catch the light, or utilise it functionally during formal dinner parties as a striking centrepiece.

Wash the glass gently in lukewarm water with mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives on the silver gilt surfaces to prevent wearing away the thin layer of gold.
