This pair of nineteenth-century French silver salt cellars takes the form of miniature garden wheelbarrows in the Rococo Revival style, rendered in a bright silver tone with openwork scrolling and detailed spoke wheels. Each diminutive barrow includes a matching miniature shovel resting inside the open basin, supported by curved legs and a single front wheel with turnings at the handles. The pieces measure 3 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Placed on a dining table as a centrepiece, these novelty condiments serve table salt during formal meals while adding character to an antique silver display. Their polished finish reflects light across the ornate 'C' scroll motifs moulded along the sides of the vessels. The rubbed marks indicate period authenticity without detracting from the form.

Novelty silver salts became popular during the nineteenth century, designed in whimsical forms such as wheelbarrows, baskets, or figures to add entertainment and elegance to formal dining tables.

These pieces were typically cast or chased from solid sterling silver or silver plate, featuring intricate openwork patterns, repousse details, and matching miniature spoons.

Authentic nineteenth-century French silver usually bears official French guarantee hallmarks, such as the Minerva head mark, alongside a diamond-shaped makers punch mark stamped into the metal surface.

Novelty silver salts can be arranged as part of a formal table setting, displayed on a dining table centrepiece tray, or showcased within a glass-fronted cabinet alongside fine tableware.

Salt can corrode silver over time, so these cellars should be emptied after use, washed gently in warm soapy water, dried thoroughly, and polished periodically with a soft silver cloth.
