The rat tail is a reinforced spine running down the reverse of the bowl, a feature originating in the late seventeenth century and later revived during the Victorian era.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver, indicated by standard British hallmarks including the makers mark, standard mark, town mark, and date letter.

Authenticity is verified by examining crisp, laser-free hallmarks, assessing natural patina and wear commensurate with age, and checking the weight and balance characteristic of period manufacture.

They can be used for traditional afternoon tea settings, displayed within glass cabinets, or incorporated into contemporary tablescapes to introduce tactile historic charm.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive specialist silver cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip desirable patination and damage hallmarks.
