This Edwardian travelling chest, dating from around 1900, is made from leather, brass, velvet, and wood in a warm brown colour. The box-shaped object features a domed lid, decorative metal studwork, side carrying handles, a hinged top lid, a fall-front door, and four velvet-lined drawers. The visual evidence shows visible surface cracking to the leather, brass ring-pull handles on each of the graduating drawers, and bright crimson-red fabric upholstery lining the interior and trays. The piece measures 37 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library or on a sideboard top, the chest serves as a practical storage receptacle for holding watches, jewellery, or a collection of small objects. The fall-front door drops flat to grant access to the tiered drawers, while the lid opens upward to reveal an upper tray lined in the same red velvet material.

Leather travelling chests became prominent during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as portable storage solutions for travellers requiring organised transport for personal belongings.

These pieces were typically constructed with sturdy timber frames bound in hide leather, secured with brass studs, metal reinforcements, and lined with silk or velvet fabrics.

Genuine period examples feature hand-set brass studs, authentic patination to the leather, period brass handles, hand-stitched seams, and aged velvet or silk interior linings.

A leather travelling chest functions well atop a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf as a practical storage box that adds warmth and historic texture to contemporary rooms.

Maintain the piece by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a leather conditioner to prevent drying.
