This Victorian library bookcase is constructed from mahogany with glass and brass. The tall, two-part piece stands 231 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. The upper section features a deep moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors enclosing multiple adjustable shelves with vertical timber backing boards. The lower section contains two frieze drawers fitted with pierced brass handles and keyholes, positioned over a pair of fielded panelled cupboard doors with small drop pulls and a moulded plinth base. The timber exhibits a warm brown colour with a visible grain and mellow patina. In a contemporary home, the bookcase suits a study, library, dining room, or living room for housing books, china, and collectables. The upper glass-fronted section provides visible storage, while the lower cupboard offers concealed storage space. The two sections separate for transport and placement within a room.

Victorian glazed bookcases are typically constructed from dark hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring a two-part design with a upper glass-fronted cabinet over a solid cupboard or drawer base. They were designed to protect books from dust while serving as central storage pieces in nineteenth-century study and drawing rooms.

Primary timbers included solid mahogany, oak, and walnut, often finished with rich French polish. Internal secondary timbers for drawer linings and backboards frequently used pine or oak, while original glass panes were hand-blown and held by timber glazing bars or moulded frames.

Authentic pieces feature period construction details such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, hand-planed timber backboards, and original lock mechanisms. The glass may exhibit slight wave patterns or bubbles characteristic of historic glass manufacturing, alongside a natural aged patina on the mahogany surface.

A Victorian glazed bookcase can be integrated into contemporary spaces by balancing traditional book arrangements with modern ceramic vessels, framed artwork, or decorative objects. Placing it against neutral wall tones creates a focal point that highlights the warmth of the mahogany wood.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood and maintain its patina. Clean the glass doors carefully using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame to avoid damaging the surrounding wood finish.
