This Victorian claret jug combines clear cut glass with gold-coloured gilt metal mounts. The circular glass body displays starburst cuts, supporting a slender faceted neck. Elaborate gilt metal hardware includes a hinged lid with a lift-up mechanism, topped by a finial shaped like a cluster of grapes. A trailing vine-shaped handle curves down the back, connecting to a decorative collar encircling the shoulder of the vessel. The metal surface shows an aged patina. Practical in size for everyday serving, the piece measures 25 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. It sits well upon a sideboard top within a dining room or a gentleman's library. The vessel functions practically for decanting wine or spirits during gatherings, or stands alone as a decorative accessory on a table surface.

Claret jugs gained immense popularity during the Victorian era in the nineteenth century, designed specifically for decanting and serving red wines imported from Bordeaux. Silversmiths and glassmakers collaborated to create these functional art pieces featuring metal mounts, handles, and spouts fitted onto lead crystal vessels.

Traditional claret jugs combine mouth-blown or hand-cut lead crystal with decorative metalwork mounts made from sterling silver, silver plate, gilt bronze, or gilt metal (ormolu). The glass is frequently cut with geometric, diamond, or floral motifs.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit signs of age-appropriate oxidisation on metal fittings, hand-carved cut glass patterns, and precise fitment between metal collars and glass necks. Metal components may feature hallmarks, makers marks, or patent numbers near the collar or hinge mechanism.

A claret jug serves as an elegant accent on a wooden sideboard, a brass bar cart, or a formal dining room table centrepiece. Combining the textured glass with dark timber, polished trays, and modern stemware creates a balanced blend of period charm and contemporary living.

Hand wash the interior using warm water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding submerged soaking of gilt metal components. Dry the glass thoroughly using a soft lint-free cloth, and wipe metal mounts gently to preserve protective lacquers and original gilding.
