Description

A set of 6 Art Nouveau Theresienthal enamelled hock glasses designed by Hans Christiansen. The glasses are enamelled with fruiting, trailing vines and are gilded at the rims. The bowls lead to clear glass stems and feet. The feet are decorated with enamelled radial green lines. Designed 1907 and design number 1496- similar shown in the book Theresienthal by Karl Wilhelm Warthorst of the Theresienthal factory page 112

History

The Theresienthal glassworks has been based in Zwiesel in Germany since 1863 but other glassworks have been on the site since 1421. Franz Steigerwald founded a crystal glass factory here that quickly became known for its high-quality products and even supplied royal houses. Over the years, ownership changed, there were bankruptcies and fires, but glass production was always resumed. Today, the Kristallglasmanufaktur Theresienthal continues to produce exquisite glass, inspired by historical styles and modern designs.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Hand-enamelled trailing vines: delicate Jugendstil decoration typical of Bavarian glassworks.
Slender drawn stems: mouth-blown glass before automated stem production.
Radial green enamel on the base: specific pattern detail introduced around 1907.
Gilded rims: fine wear along edges.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This set of six Art Nouveau Theresienthal hock glasses belongs to the 1900 period and is designed by Hans Christiansen. Made from clear glass, enamel, and gold gilt, the pieces display a clear and green colour scheme with hand-painted green vine leaves, fruiting trailing vines, and gilded rims. Each vessel stands on an elongated clear glass stem above a circular base adorned with enamelled radial green lines and radiating basal detailing. Individual glasses measure 20 cm high by 7.5 cm wide. The set functions as a decorative display collection suited for placement on a sideboard top during formal dining or cabinet exhibition in a traditional reception room.

Art Nouveau glassware is characterised by organic forms, fluid lines, and nature-inspired motifs such as stylized flora, vines, and insects. Glassmakers during this period incorporated decorative techniques including acid etching, enamelling, and gilding to create distinct, decorative pieces.

These glasses were typically crafted from hand-blown clear glass, with decorative motifs applied using vitrified glass enamels painted onto the surface. Additional detailing often involved hand-applied gold leaf or liquid gold gilding fired at low temperatures to adhere to the glass.

Authentic pieces are identified by specific design motifs attributable to documented designers of the period, subtle irregularities characteristic of hand-blown glass, and slight raised texture on hand-painted enamel details. Checking catalogue references for makers such as Theresienthal assists in verification.

Stemware of this era can be styled on a sideboard top, placed within illuminated glass cabinets, or arranged along a dining table setting to add decorative texture and historical interest to modern spaces.

Enamelled glass should strictly be washed by hand using warm water and mild soap, avoiding dishwashers which degrade enamel and gilding. Storage should be upright with sufficient clearance to prevent chipping the delicate glass stems and bowls.
