This Edwardian standard lamp dates from around 1910 and brings an English Country House aesthetic to an interior. Standing 129.5 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 25.5 cm deep, the piece is constructed from gilt wood and gesso with a warm gold finish throughout, complemented by a brass candle sleeve fitment at the very top. The tall floor lamp features a faceted column, a carved central knop with moulded detailing, and a multi-tiered stepped base that rests on the floor. Electrical wiring is handled by antique double twist bronze flex running down the side of the shaft, terminating in a plug connection. Visible signs of age include surface wear and craquelure across the gilded gesso, along with subtle rubbing on the corners of the pedestal base. This traditional lighting piece functions well in an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or study, where it provides ambient illumination alongside other period furnishings.

Edwardian standard lamps produced around 1910 often incorporated historical revivals, such as Gothic and neoclassical details, scaled for residential electric lighting.

These fixtures were predominantly crafted from carved wood or plaster over wood, coated with gesso and finished with leaf gilding or metallic paint.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit period-correct wiring conversions or early fitments, along with natural surface wear that reveals the gesso preparation layers beneath the gilding.

Positioned alongside modern soft furnishings or in an alcove, a gilded standard lamp adds sculptural height and warm metallic tones to contrast with contemporary decor.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding moisture and solvent-based cleaners that can dissolve the delicate gesso and leaf finish.
