Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. The Sustainable Choice

This pair of vintage Chinese table lamps originates from 1960 and showcases a classic Chinoiserie style suitable for traditional and eclectic interiors. Formed with baluster-shaped porcelain bodies, the lamps display a vibrant blue and white hand-painted finish featuring prominent Double Happiness characters, intricate lotus scroll motifs, and geometric collar borders. Each piece includes moulded lion dog neck handles, a brass electrical fitting at the top, and a dark carved wooden base at the bottom with a circular turned profile. The glazing shows crisp cobalt details against a pale ground, alongside minor age-related wear and a small chip to the upper rim of one piece largely concealed by the brass mounting plate. While exact measurements are not provided, these lamps are proportioned for practical placement on surfaces such as a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study. They provide ambient lighting while functioning as striking decorative accents in an English Country House aesthetic.

FAQs

The Double Happiness symbol () originated during the Song Dynasty and is a traditional Chinese ornamental design associated with weddings and good fortune. Porcelain bearing this character combined with blue underglaze cobalt hand-painting became widely produced for both domestic use and export from the late Qing period onward.

These lamps are constructed from hard-paste kaolin clay, decorated with cobalt blue oxide paint under a clear glaze, and fired at high temperatures. The converted lamp bases frequently feature turned or carved dark hardwood stands and solid brass bayonet bulb holders.

Authentic pieces feature hand-painted underglaze brushwork showing slight variations in glaze thickness and cobalt intensity, rather than uniform transfer prints. Additional indicators include unglazed clay foot rims, historical drill holes for wiring at the base, and age-related wear on the timber mountings.

Blue and white ceramic lamps function as versatile focal points when paired symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or bedside drawers. They balance both traditional schemes featuring dark mahogany and modern minimalist spaces by introducing pattern, texture, and organic colour contrast.

Dust the porcelain body regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners on the glazed ceramic, and use a dry brush to clear dust from intricate wooden carvings and brass electrical fittings.
