Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Pierced crenated gallery at the top: altar candlestick styling of the Gothic Revival.
Diamond-cut twisted stems: brass casting in the ecclesiastical taste of the period.
Sectional turned brass construction: assembled using a central internal iron rod.
Turned hardwood plinth bases: fitted to house weight and conversion wiring.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A pair of large Continental table lamps dating from circa 1900, executed in the Gothic Revival style. Each piece incorporates a polished brass finish with gold and cream elements, supported by a turned mahogany circular wooden base. The design includes a tall spiral twist column, a pierced crown gallery beneath the shade, and stepped circular mouldings at the foot, paired with a pleated fabric lampshade. These substantial fixtures stand 105 cm high with a 24 cm diameter base and 43 cm wide shades, presenting clean surfaces with lacquered protection. Suitable for placement on a large sideboard top within a traditional dining room or hallway setting, these matching lamps provide functional lighting while complementing classic interior schemes. The balanced proportions make them appropriate for illuminating large surface areas, while the durable construction ensures stable placement on flat wooden furniture surfaces throughout the home.

FAQs

Gothic Revival lighting incorporates architecture-inspired elements such as pointed arches, spiral twist columns, tracery, and decorative galleries, popularised during the nineteenth century across Britain and Europe.

These lamps were predominantly crafted from solid cast or turned brass, bronze, and dark hardwoods, often featuring heavy weighted bases for balance alongside hand-finished detailing.

Authentic pieces typically display seam lines from casting, natural oxidisation within crevices, traditional screw fittings, substantial physical weight, and evidence of historical re-wiring.

Position them symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or wide desk to create balanced illumination, pairing rich warm metal tones against dark wallpaper or structured neutral backdrops.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can strip protective lacquers or accelerate uneven tarnishing over time.
