This Victorian brooch is a Scottish piece from approximately 1860, made from silver set with eight different coloured agates and three citrines. The mounting incorporates engraved foliage motifs and a secure safety chain dangling beneath. Eight distinct banded and solid agate slices form the perimeter in shades of red, green, grey, orange, and yellow, enclosing three faceted orange oval citrines. The silver body has decorative pierced openwork settings surrounding the central gems, a long fastening pin, and a C-clasp on the reverse. Practical in size for modern wear, the brooch measures 1.5 cm high, 4 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. It serves as a wearable personal ornament and adds a traditional Highland element when pinned to garments, lapels, or scarves. The construction displays detailed metalwork alongside polished gemstones, combining coloured stones with bright polished silverwork in a classic nineteenth-century design.

Scottish pebble jewellery became prominent during the Victorian era, inspired by Queen Victorias affection for Scotland and her Highland estate at Balmoral. These items typically feature native Scottish agates, jaspers, and quartz set into silver mountings adorned with intricate engraving.

Traditional pieces were crafted from sterling silver or nickel silver, inlaid with hand-cut polished agates, bloodstones, and jaspers. Central accents frequently featured cairngorm quartz or faceted citrines set in bezel or rub-over mountings.

Authentic Victorian examples showcase hand-cut, precisely fitted stone tesserae with minimal gap-fillers, fine hand-engraved silver borders, and period-correct fittings such as extended pin stems and simple C-clasps.

A Victorian Scottish brooch can be styled on the lapel of a tailored jacket, fastened at the high neck of a buttoned blouse, or used to secure a heavy woollen scarf or knitwear.

Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth to buff the silver and polished stones. Avoid submerging the item in liquid or using chemical dips, as moisture can compromise the stone settings and underlying metalwork.
