Victorian Natural Untreated Ruby & Diamond Brooch with Gem Report Antique Pendant

19th century
Description

A magnificent Victorian ruby and diamond brooch pendant, dating to the Victorian period and accompanied by a gemmological report confirming natural, untreated rubies, and natural diamonds.

This beautifully crafted piece is designed as an elaborate radiating cluster, centred with a vivid ruby and surrounded by concentric layers of shimmering old cut diamonds. The design has a wonderful sense of movement and light, typical of the finest late Victorian jewellery.

The stones are set in silver to the front, enhancing the brilliance of the diamonds, with a gold reverse in the traditional manner of the period. The rubies display a rich purplish-red hue and, notably, the report confirms no evidence of treatment—an increasingly desirable quality.

Both elegant and versatile, the piece may be worn as either a brooch or a pendant. The brooch fitting is removable, allowing the piece to hang beautifully when worn as a pendant, and it is complete with a safety chain.

A truly eye-catching and collectible Victorian jewel, equally suited to wear or as part of a fine antique jewellery collection.

This Victorian brooch and pendant dates to the Victorian period and exhibits a circular, radiating cluster configuration. The piece consists of a central round purplish-red ruby enclosed by openwork silver metalwork inset with numerous old cut diamonds, complemented by alternating outer claw-set rubies and projecting diamond clusters. The silver front contrasts with a gold reverse and a removable pin mechanism with a safety chain. The metalwork displays starburst motifs and detailed openwork framing throughout the face. Measuring 3.5cm in diameter, the jewel is sized for wearable adornment. The item functions as an antique accessory for personal wear or as a display piece within a collection of fine antique jewellery.

Victorian ruby and diamond jewellery typically features intricate openwork, cluster arrangements, and starburst motifs popular during the mid-to-late 19th century. These pieces often utilised silver-topped gold settings to maximize the brilliance of diamonds alongside rich red gemstones.

Craftsmen of the era commonly set diamonds in silver-fronted mountings with gold backs to prevent oxidisation from marking clothing. Rubies were selected for their saturated colour and were set in claw or grain mountings within complex pierced framework.

Authentic Victorian brooches usually feature period-specific construction details such as extended pin stems, C-clasps, silver-on-gold settings, and hand-cut stones like old mine or rose cuts. Gemmological reports confirm whether rubies are natural and untreated.

A Victorian brooch can be attached to the lapel of a tailored blazer, fastened at the neckline of a blouse, or fitted with a converter to wear as a pendant necklace. It also serves as an accent on silk scarves or outer coat collars.

Clean antique gemstone jewellery gently using warm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemical dip treatments. Store the piece individually in a padded jewellery box to prevent surface contact with other items.
