A Victorian butterfly pendant brooch, dating from circa 1900, employs silver and rose gold set with rubies, sapphires, rose-cut and old-cut diamonds, and three natural pearls. The insect takes shape with openwork wings carrying small gemstones, a central cluster of circular stones, and an articulated body accented by small white pearls and slender legs, accompanied by delicate curved antennae at the head. A hinged bale and a detachable pin mechanism allow dual wear as either a pendant or a brooch pinned to clothing. The piece measures 31.6 x 26.4 mm excluding the bale and weighs 8.37 grams, making it suitable for daily wear on a lapel, scarf, or suspended from a gold chain around the neck. It functions as a personal jewellery accessory for formal or casual attire in modern wardrobes.

Victorian insect jewellery emerged during the 19th century, driven by a fascination with natural history and symbolism. Motifs such as butterflies, beetles, and bees were crafted using precious metals, coloured gemstones, and pearls, representing transformation and nature.

Victorian brooches were commonly constructed from 15ct or 18ct yellow gold, frequently layered with silver settings on top to enhance white diamonds. Gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and natural seed pearls were prominently featured.

Authentic Victorian pieces often feature silver-topped gold settings, hand-cut gemstones such as rose-cut or old-mine cut diamonds, and period-specific fasteners such as extended C-clasps or dual pendant-brooch fittings.

Antique brooches can be attached to coat lapels, velvet chokers, or silk scarves, or worn as pendants on fine gold chains when fitted with a dual bail attachment.

Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or ultrasonic baths that could damage organic natural pearls or loosen pave-set gemstones.
