.

Dimensions:

Height – 54cm/ Width - 127cm/ Depth - 53cm

.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition, with signs of age and use throughout. The oak surfaces display age-related scratches, scuffs, marks and variations in colour, consistent with the piece's age. There is further wear to the edges and mouldings, with some surface marks to the interior and underside of the lid. The original iron side handles remain in place, and the trunk is fitted with castors. There is evidence of historic woodworm, but this has long gone and been treated as a precaution. Overall, a substantial and practical antique storage piece with an attractive aged patina.

Our carpenter inspects, repairs and restores our items, so you can have full confidence that what you buy from us is ready for your home! We ask that you take the time to look at all the photos, as they form part of the description and condition report of the item.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large Victorian blanket box belongs to the rustic farmhouse style and is made from oak with a dark brown finish. The construction uses dovetail joinery at the corners, complemented by a hinged plank-top lid with a moulded edge, a moulded plinth base, and original iron drop handles attached to the sides. A keyhole escutcheon sits centrally on the front, and the surface shows visible age-related wear, scuffs, scratches, and colour variations. The trunk measures 54 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. Positioned on castors for mobility, this piece provides ample interior storage space for household textiles and everyday items. It suits placement in a living room, bedroom, or hallway, functioning as a practical storage chest and a surface for displaying decorative objects or sitting.

FAQs

Historically referred to as coffers or bedding chests, these heavy wooden trunks served as fundamental storage pieces across European households from the medieval era through to the nineteenth century, used primarily to secure linens, clothing, and household valuables.

Traditional blanket boxes are constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, pine, or elm, joined with hand-cut dovetails and fitted with wrought iron drop handles alongside hand-forged lock plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit evidence of hand-planed timber, irregular dovetail jointing, original iron or brass hardware, and natural uneven surface wear and patina inside joint recesses.

A flat-topped oak trunk functions effectively as a central coffee table in a living area, a storage bench situated at the foot of a bed, or an entryway feature piece for storing footwear and textiles.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the trunk situated away from direct radiators or damp conditions.
