Art Deco Pair of Silver Plated Penguin Pepperettes by James Deakin C1930s

1920 - 1940
Description

This charming pair of silver-plated penguins dating from the 1930's, would be a fun and practical addition to any dining table. The pull-off tops sit securely, and the pair stands well. There is the usual loss to some of the plated areas consistent with age, and it is in no way detrimental. They would be great on the Christmas dinner table.

In addition to the obvious use on the dining table, this delightful pair would command attention wherever they are displayed.

This pair of pepper shakers dates from the 1930 period in the Art Deco style, formed in the shape of penguins with elongated beaks and applied flippers. Made from silver plate with a silver finish, the items exhibit loss to the plated areas consistent with age, pull-off tops, and flat webbed bases. Each shaker measures 10 cm in height, 7 cm in width, and 7 cm in depth. Placed on a dining table centre in a home today, the shakers function practically as pepperettes while commanding attention wherever they are displayed. The pull-off tops sit securely, and the pair stands well on any surface.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Art Deco movement introduced stylized geometric and zoomorphic forms into everyday dining accessories. Silversmiths created figurative silver-plated items, such as animal-shaped pepperettes and cocktail accessories, to add playfulness and modern design to traditional table settings.

1930s pepperettes were commonly crafted from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver. The manufacturing process involved casting or stamping metal sections, assembling the body, and applying a silver layer via electroplating.

Authentic pieces feature makers marks or EPNS stamps pressed into the base or lower edges. Look for period-specific design characteristics, such as sleek Art Deco proportions, screw-on or push-fit bases, and age-appropriate wear to the silver plating.

Novelty pepperettes serve as functional table centerpieces or accent decor on sideboards and bar carts. Their sculptural forms allow them to be displayed alongside modern tableware or curated in glass cabinets as decorative collectables.

Maintain silver plate by wiping with a soft, dry cloth after use. To remove tarnish, apply a gentle non-abrasive silver polish using a soft cotton cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or scrubbers that can wear away the thin silver layer.
