Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Pierced brass mountings and dense studwork: characteristic metalwork from the Indian Ocean trade.
Cast brass carrying handles on shaped backplates: heavy hardware made for sea transport.
Dark oxidisation around the studs and hinges: undisturbed metal over a long period.
Hand-planed interior boards and internal till boxes: traditional joinery without modern machine cutting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian Zanzibar blanket or storage box is made from warm red-brown padouk wood with brass and iron elements. It is heavily decorated with geometric brass stud work, pierced brass plaques, and brass edging along the borders. A central drop hasp fastening secures the front, while heavy iron drop handles are fitted to the sides. The visible wood displays a rich patina across the flat rectangular top, front, and sides. Measuring 49.5 cm high, 84 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, this piece works well in a gentleman's library, living room, or bedroom. It provides practical storage for blankets, pillows, or cherished belongings, and its flat surface allows it to function as a coffee table or decorative accent in a modern home.

FAQs

A Zanzibar chest is a traditional hardwood storage trunk adorned with elaborate brass studding and metal plates, historically produced along the Swahili Coast as part of the Indian Ocean trade network.

These chests are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as padouk, teak, or rosewood, combined with hand-cut brass plates, brass studs, and iron carrying handles.

Authentic pieces feature geometric patterns of hand-hammered brass studs, pierced brass corner plates, original drop-side handles, and signs of hand-planed timber construction.

A Zanzibar chest functions as a central coffee table in a living area, a statement storage box at the foot of a bed, or a decorative entryway piece to add global historic texture.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking; avoid harsh metal polishes on the patinated brass surfaces.
