This early Victorian rosewood footstool dates from circa 1840 and follows a classic design with a square seat frame. The dark brown timber shows rich grain patterns throughout the base, complemented by a vibrant red velvet upholstered top with a smooth nap. Four heavily turned legs feature intricate knobbed turnings, tapering down to plain feet at the bottom. The seat measures 34.5 cm by 35.5 cm with a height of 38 cm. Such a versatile piece suits a variety of settings within the modern home. It functions practically as a dressing table stool, provides additional seating in a living room, or fits comfortably by a fireplace hearth.

During the early Victorian period around 1840, rosewood was frequently utilized for domestic furniture due to its dark tone and dense grain pattern. Stools from this era served as functional accent seating near hearths, dressing tables, and pianos in mid-nineteenth-century homes.

Stools from the 1840s typically utilized solid or veneered rosewood frames assembled with mortise and tenon joinery. The legs feature wood lathe turnings, while the seats were traditionally upholstered over woven webbing and natural padding.

Authentic pieces display dark streaks characteristic of genuine rosewood, along with hand-finished turned legs showing subtle variations from manual lathe work. Look for traditional joinery underneath the frame and signs of period construction techniques.

Place the stool near a fireplace, beside an armchair, or at the foot of a bed to add textural contrast and historic character. The dark timber tones pair well with neutral upholstery, modern minimalism, or traditional decor schemes.

Keep the timber frame away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying or splitting of the wood. Clean the woodwork with a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly along the grain, and vacuum the fabric upholstery using a soft brush attachment.
