19th Century Mahogany Breakfront Glazed Library Bookcase

19th century
Description

A handsome 19th-century mahogany breakfront bookcase of low, well-proportioned form, offering generous display and storage space behind four glazed doors.

The stepped rectangular top has a moulded edge above a breakfront arrangement, with the wider central section projecting beyond the narrower side cupboards. Each section is enclosed by a full-length glazed door, allowing books and collections to remain visible while protected from dust.

The fitted interiors contain adjustable shelves, providing flexibility for books of varying heights or the display of collectable objects. The doors retain their brass hinges and inset key escutcheons, while the cabinet is raised on a substantial moulded plinth base.

The well-figured mahogany has developed a rich, warm colour, complemented by restrained moulded detailing throughout.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Victorian breakfront library bookcase is made from mahogany with a warm brown colour and features four full-length glazed doors, brass hinges, and inset key escutcheons. The stepped rectangular top has a moulded edge above a breakfront arrangement where the central section projects beyond the side cupboards, and the entire cabinet sits on a substantial moulded plinth base with fitted interiors containing adjustable shelves. The bookcase measures 113 cm high, 188 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a home today, this low, well-proportioned bookcase sits in a gentleman's library, study, or living room, offering generous storage and display space behind glass doors that keep collections visible while protected from dust. The adjustable interior shelving provides flexibility for books of varying heights or the display of collectable objects, suiting traditional and classic interiors.

FAQs

A breakfront bookcase is a substantial piece of library furniture characterised by a central section that projects forward beyond the two flanking side sections. Originating in the 18th century and widely produced throughout the 19th century, this design creates visual depth and architectural interest in a room.

High-grade dense timber such as Cuban or West Indian mahogany was predominantly used for the exterior carcass, often featuring rich flame mahogany veneers. Interior construction frequently utilised pine, oak, or deal as secondary woods, alongside glass pane glazing and brass door fittings.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer construction, hand-blown glass panes with subtle imperfections, and original timber backboards. Natural age-related wear, rich patination on the mahogany, and period-correct lock mechanisms also indicate authenticity.

A large mahogany breakfront bookcase anchors a study, living area, or wide hallway by acting as an architectural feature. Pair it with neutral wall finishes to let the dark wood stand out, mixing leather-bound volumes with curated ceramics and sculptural accents on the adjustable shelves.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers patina. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp walls to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, or veneer lift.
