Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early nineteenth-century Qing Dynasty Chinese wedding cabinet takes the form of a freestanding elm carcass finished in red lacquer with gilt and black hand-painted landscape decoration, featuring pagodas, bridges, figures, and trees. The front incorporates two upper doors fitted with an ornate brass central lockplate and two small lower drawers with round ring drop handles. Surface wear includes visible craquelure, rubbing to the red and gold finish, and natural patination across the timber. The cabinet measures 120.5 cm wide, 192.5 cm high, and 64.5 cm deep. Positioned in a contemporary interior, this tall storage piece functions effectively as a focal point in a living room, dining room, or hallway, providing enclosed shelving and multi-level compartments behind the main doors alongside supplementary drawer space at the base. The cabinet stands on block feet and displays a rectangular silhouette with linear framing around the doors and drawers.

FAQs

Traditionally presented as part of a brides dowry during the Qing dynasty, these cabinets served as central storage pieces for clothing, household linens, and valuables within traditional Chinese homes.

These cabinets feature timber frames, commonly elm or pine, finished with multiple layers of natural sap lacquer, detailed with gold-leaf paintwork, and fitted with hand-hammered brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit traditional joinery without modern metal nails, authentic surface crackling or wear to the natural lacquer, and hand-cut brass faceplates and pins.

A red lacquer cabinet acts as a strong focal point in an entryway or living room, pairing effectively with modern neutral schemes, dark wood accent pieces, or contemporary artwork.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and lacquer cracking, wiping surfaces gently with a dry, soft cloth rather than chemical cleaners.
