A Rare Victorian Burnt Amber and Green Peacock Eye Art Nouveau Glass Biscuit Barrel, Attributed to Stuart & Sons C1890-1905

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very fine and rare late Victorian Art Nouveau glass biscuit barrel, attributed to Stuart & Sons of Stourbridge, dating to c1890-1905.

It has a beautifully rounded body in a rich burnt amber colour, decorated with striking applied emerald-green Peacock Eye motifs. Each eye has a raised central pupil surrounded by concentric rings of green glass, from which elongated trails flow organically down the body, continuing underneath the glass towards the polished pontil.

The contrast between the warm amber and vibrant emerald-green is particularly striking...and a rare colour combination, very much in keeping with the emerging Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century.

It retains its original silver-plated collar, swing handle and removable lid with a spherical finial. The fittings are marked D & A for Daniel & Arter of Birmingham, together with their globe trademark, E.P.N.S. and pattern number H7046 ¼.

Date & Origin

England, c1890-1905. Period of Queen Victoria.

Condition

The glass is in superb condition with no chips cracks or restoration and is clean and clear internally.

There is a little surface wear around the spherical finial of the silver-plated lid, consistent with more than a century of handling when lifting and replacing the cover. This is simply a natural patina acquired through use.

Dimensions

Height: 15cm

Diameter: 14cm

Weight:801 grams

Historical Context

During the closing decades of the 19th century, the glassmakers of Stourbridge were producing some of the most imaginative decorative glass of the Victorian period.

The emerging Art Nouveau movement, which developed towards the end of the 19th century, placed particular emphasis on flowing lines, organic forms and designs inspired by nature. Rather than relying on rigid symmetry and traditional ornament, glassmakers increasingly explored decoration that appeared to grow and flow naturally across the surface of an object.

Stuart & Sons were among the Stourbridge glassmakers associated with applied glass decoration, including Peacock Eye motifs and elaborate trailing. These techniques required considerable skill, with contrasting coloured glass being applied and manipulated while still hot, to create intricate designs.

This biscuit barrel is an amazing example of that artistic approach....both highly unusual and very distinctly Art Nouveau in character.

This Victorian biscuit barrel exemplifies Art Nouveau style. The rounded body consists of burnt amber glass adorned with applied emerald-green peacock eye motifs, organic green trailing, a polished pontil underneath, and a raised central pupil on each eye. A silver-plated collar, a removable domed lid with a spherical finial, and a swing handle complete the hardware. Maker's marks include D & A for Daniel & Arter with a globe trademark, E.P.N.S., and the pattern number H7046 ¼. The piece measures 15 cm in height and 14 cm in diameter. In a modern home, this vessel sits neatly on a sideboard top to store biscuits or treats. The metal fittings display surface wear around the spherical finial from handling, whilst the glass remains clean and clear internally with no chips, cracks, or restoration.

Biscuit barrels became essential items in late Victorian households during the late 19th century. Glassmakers adapted to the emerging Art Nouveau movement between 1890 and 1910, incorporating organic motifs, flowing lines, and applied glass decorations onto functional tea table accessories.

These items were predominantly crafted from hand-blown lead or soda glass paired with metal mounts. The mounts, including the rim, lid, and swing handle, were typically made of silver plate, electroplated Britannia metal, or sterling silver.

Authentic Stuart & Sons Art Nouveau glass often features distinctive applied green glass trailing, frequently designed in peacock eye or tadpole shapes on amber, clear, or green glass bodies. Most pieces were unsigned, so identification relies on glass composition, pontil marks, and known pattern cataloguing.

Display the vessel as a decorative object on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a glass cabinet where natural light can pass through the tinted glass. It can be used as a standalone accent or grouped with other period glass items.

Clean the glass gently using lukewarm water and a mild liquid detergent, avoiding immersion of metal components where water could become trapped. Polish the silver-plated rim and lid using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver cleaner to prevent tarnish build-up.
