Georgian Half Wrythen Ale Glass C1800

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A Georgian half wrythen ale glass dating to c1800.

It has a conical bowl with tight wrythen moulding spiralling around the lower half, resting on an angular knop stem and supported by a conical foot with a snapped pontil.

The tight wrythen moulding creates a particularly attractive optical effect, catching and refracting the light through the spiralling ribs while leaving the upper part of the bowl plain.

Historical Context

Wrythen moulding was a popular decorative technique in Georgian glassmaking, produced by twisting the hot glass while it was being formed in a ribbed mould. The resulting spiral pattern provided decoration without the additional labour and expense of wheel cutting and, particularly in candlelight, gave the glass an attractive sense of movement and brilliance.

Height: 13.9cm.

Bowl diameter: 5.7cm.

This Georgian drinking glass originates from England around 1800 during the period of King George III. The piece is made of clear lead glass and features a conical bowl decorated with tight half-wrythen spiral moulding on the lower half, a knopped stem with multiple collars, and a conical foot with a snapped pontil. The clear material allows light to pass through the spiralling ribs while the upper portion of the bowl remains smooth, presenting no chips, cracks or restoration. The glass stands 13.9 cm in height with a bowl diameter of 5.7 cm and a foot diameter of 6.7 cm, weighing 123 grams. In a modern interior, this antique table accessory suits placement on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space. It fits well within an English Country House aesthetic and functions as a decorative display object or as a display piece within a collection of historical glassware. The traditional form and optical decorative technique reflect Georgian glassmaking methods, offering a period example for daily viewing or display.

A Georgian wrythen ale glass is an English drinking vessel from the 18th or early 19th century designed for serving ale. It features spiralled or diagonal fluting, known as wrythen moulding, across all or part of the glass bowl.

These glasses were hand-blown using lead glass, also known as flint glass, which was introduced in England in the late 17th century. The material provided optical clarity, weight, and a resonant ring when struck.

Authentic pieces generally show a subtle greyish tint in the glass, hand-blown irregularities, and a pontil scar or smooth ground pontil mark on the underside of the base. Wear marks should be present under the foot rim rather than artificially placed.

Historic stemware is often displayed inside illuminated glass cabinets, on open shelving alongside books, or arranged on a sideboard top to catch natural light.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild dishwashing liquid. Dishwashers and extreme temperature changes must be avoided to prevent thermal shock and clouding.
