Georgian Set of Three Bristol Green Indian Club Shaped Decanters

19th century
Description

This is a late Georgian set of three "Bristol" green Indian club shaped decanters and stoppers dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1820.

The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear consistent with some 200 years of use.

The decanters are in the Bristol green colourway and are decorated with gilded faux labels for Brandy, Hollands and Rum. They also have gilded pouring rims. The bases are round in shape, are plain, carry polished out pontil marks and measure 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter. The decanters are 17.5 cm (7 inches) in height without the stoppers and 22 cm (8.8 inches) in height with the stoppers inserted.

The stoppers are of lozenge form and appear to be the originals. They are decorated in gilt with the letters B, H, and R in the same font as on the decanters and are a good fit.

There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. The gilding is slightly rubbed in places.

The set weighs over 1.2 kg. (~ 2 lb. 10 oz.).

A late Georgian set of three Bristol green glass decanters and stoppers dating from the 19th century embodies a classic gentleman's library style. The blown glass vessels take an Indian club shape in a rich green colourway, featuring round plain bases with polished out pontil marks, flattened disc stoppers, and gilded pouring rims. Each decanter displays decorative gilded faux labels with cursive lettering for Brandy, Hollands, and Rum, complemented by matching gilded monograms on the stoppers. Age related wear appears as slight rubbing to the gilding, consistent with centuries of use. Measuring 22 cm high and 7.5 cm wide, the vessels present compact proportions suitable for display. Practical placement includes a sideboard top in a dining room, a study table, or a home bar counter. The decanters hold spirits while serving as decorative accessories that complement traditional and classic interior schemes. A collector of antique glassware or someone seeking period accents for a drinks cabinet will find these pieces integrate well into existing collections without requiring restoration or special maintenance beyond gentle dusting.

Bristol green decanters are 18th and early 19th-century glass vessels crafted from rich green-tinted glass, named after the prominent glassmaking production centre in Bristol, England.

These decanters were hand-blown using lead glass coloured with metal oxides, featuring ground pontil scars on the base and gilded labels painted and fired directly onto the glass surface.

Authentic examples feature hand-ground stoppers with matching cut numbers or marks, a snapped pontil scar on the underside, and natural age-related friction wear on the base and stoppers.

Display decanters on a wooden sideboard, drinks trolley, or tray where natural light can pass through the coloured glass to create visual interest.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding immersion of gilded areas, harsh chemical cleaners, or abrasive sponges that could lift the gold leaf decoration.
