Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Hand-carved mother-of-pearl panels showing Canton figures and pavilions: early nineteenth-century export work.
Multi-knuckle hinge flush with the silver frame: traditional hand assembly.
Faded wash gilding inside the silver mounts: original early nineteenth-century interior finish.
Blank oval cartouche on the lid: unengraved space left for an owner's initials.

This Chinese export silver case etui box from around 1800 combines solid silver and carved cream-coloured relief panels. The tapered rectangular body displays intricate carved figural scenes depicting figures within a garden setting and detailed architectural pavilions, complemented by floral chasing along the side mounts. The exterior features hinged hardware securing the lid at the top, which has a curved upper profile. Metallic silver elements frame the carved panels, and the structure rests flat on a plain narrow base. Suitable for display on a bookshelf, this decorative container provides a compact home for small keepsakes in a library or study setting. The piece stands 7.8 cm tall, 3.8 cm wide, and 1.3 cm deep.

An etui is a small ornamental case produced in China during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for export to Western markets, designed to carry small implements such as needles or bodkins.

These cases were typically constructed using silver structural framing fitted with carved bone, ivory, or mother-of-pearl panels secured by silver hinges and push-piece clasps.

Authentic pieces feature detailed hand-carved relief panels depicting traditional pavilions and figures, alongside characteristic artisan silver marks or pseudo-hallmarks along the silver rims.

The item can be displayed inside a glass cabinet or mounted within a protective shadow box on a bookshelf alongside other historical metalwork collectables.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid liquid cleaners or dips that can seep into and damage organic carved materials.
