Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Cast brass carrying handles secured with slotted screws: standard Victorian hardware.
Flush brass straps and corners: heavy protection designed for sea and military transit.
Solid single-plank camphorwood boards: hand-planed timber before modern saw-mill conversion.
Mellowed wax finish with honest bruising: generations of handling and wear.

This nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian campaign trunk is made from warm brown teak with a visible wood grain and a good patina, accented by protective brass corner mounts, brass straps, and a flush escutcheon. The rectangular chest has a hinged lid, a recessed brass plaque on top, and dark metal side carrying handles, alongside minor bumps and bruises associated with age and use. Dovetailed joints secure the construction, while the interior provides a useful storage area accessible from the lifting lid. Measuring 48 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, the piece occupies a practical footprint within a home. It sits well at the foot of the bed or serves as a coffee table in a gentleman's library or living space, offering both surface utility and concealed storage for blankets or daily items.

Anglo-Indian campaign furniture was designed for British military officers and colonial officials stationed in India during the 18th and 19th centuries. Pieces were constructed by Indian craftsmen combining Western functional designs with durable native hardwoods and protective brass fittings for travel.

These trunks were typically constructed from robust hardwoods such as teak, camphorwood, or mahogany to withstand climate shifts and insect damage. Heavy brass corner brackets, flush handles, and reinforced straps were fitted flush to the wood to prevent snagging during transport.

Authentic pieces feature inset or flush-mounted brass hardware designed to withstand rough transport. Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, heavy native timbers like teak or aromatic camphorwood, period locks, and signs of genuine age-related wear around carrying handles and straps.

A campaign trunk functions effectively as a central coffee table in a living room, a foot-of-bed storage box, or a accent piece in a hallway. The warm timber tones and geometric brasswork complement both traditional and modern eclectic design schemes.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, and wipe brass fittings gently without using harsh chemical cleaners.
