Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French chateau style pendant light from 1920 is a cast brass and etched glass hall lantern with a warm brass finish. The structure incorporates an ornate scrolling framework holding six sectional tapering glass panels, each decorated with a starburst etching, alongside acanthus leaf details, a pendant hanging loop, an original chain, and an open scrolling canopy. Additional visible elements include a bulb visible through the glass panels, a dark aged patina on the metal, and curved corner mouldings framing the glass. Measuring 44 cm high by 22 cm wide by 44 cm deep, the pendant light is suited for hanging in an entryway, hallway, or dining space in a contemporary home.

FAQs

French Rococo style hall lanterns typically feature asymmetrical curves, leaf motifs, and ornate cast metal frames surrounding glass panels. Originating in the 18th century, these fixtures were designed to protect candles or oil lamps from draughts while illuminating entryways and stairwells.

Authentic period lanterns are generally constructed using cast brass, bronze, or gilded metal frames combined with hand-cut or starburst-etched glass panels. Fasteners, chains, and internal candle sockets or light fittings were historically crafted from brass or iron.

Look for hand-finished casting marks, slight variations in the metal thickness, and natural oxidisation or patina in unpolished crevices. Original glass panels often display subtle air bubbles, hand-cut starburst engravings, or hand-bevelled edges.

An antique lantern can serve as a focal point when hung in a contemporary foyer, stairwell landing, or modern country kitchen. Mixing traditional brass lighting with understated, neutral interiors creates a balanced contrast between historical character and minimalist design.

Dust the metal frame and glass regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes on aged brass, as these can strip the natural patina; clean glass panels gently using a diluted glass cleaner applied directly to the cloth rather than spraying the fixture.
