This pair of French Empire table lamps dates from circa 1800 and is made from ormolu, patinated bronze, and marble in gold and black. Each lamp takes the form of a classical column with a dark tapered and fluted shaft, mounted with ormolu gilt leaf capitals at the top and acanthus ornament above the base. The triform plinth bases stand on three gilded lion paw feet, complemented by newly installed gold braided flex and Bayonet Cap bulb holders. The lamps show visible wear commensurate with age across their patinated and gilded surfaces. Measuring 46 cm high, these table lamps are well-proportioned for placement on a sideboard top or a grand side table in a drawing room or study. They provide warm, functional illumination while bringing classical French interior styling to a traditional or eclectic interior scheme.

French Empire lighting emerged in the early nineteenth century, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture. The style is characterised by military motifs, classical columns, symmetry, and a rich contrast between dark patinated bronze and bright gilt metalwork.

Authentic period pieces were predominantly crafted using heavy cast bronze or brass, featuring decorative accents coated in mercury gilding (ormolu). Shafts were frequently executed in dark patinated bronze, marble, or porphyry to accentuate the gilded cast embellishments.

Period ormolu exhibits hand-chased detailing with sharp precision, along with natural oxidisation and subtle wear to high-contact surfaces. The underlying construction typically includes hand-cut threads, square assembly nuts, and heavy, solid-cast bronze components rather than modern lightweight alloys.

Placing a matching pair symmetrically on a dining room sideboard or entryway console creates immediate visual balance and architectural structure. Contrast the dark tones and gilded details against a neutral backdrop or pair them with contemporary artwork to bridge traditional and modern aesthetics.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate chasing. Avoid liquid polishes, abrasive cleaners, or water, as these substances strip historical patinas and damage original gold leaf or ormolu finishes.
