This Regency mahogany Pembroke table has a compact, rectangular drop-leaf top with two hinged flaps and a well-aged dark brown patina displaying visible figuring. The frieze contains two working drawers to the front, each fitted with dark turned wooden knobs, supported by a central ring-turned pedestal column above four reeded sabre legs terminating in brass castors. Measuring 67.5 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, the table extends to 82.5 cm wide with the flaps raised. Well-suited for placement at the end of a sofa or beside a chair in a living room or study, this side table provides a convenient surface for a lamp, book, or cup. The drop-leaf mechanism allows the surface area to adapt easily to available space, making it both practical and decorative for daily use in a traditional or period interior.

FAQs

A Regency Pembroke table is a versatile drop-leaf side table dating from the early nineteenth century. Characterised by two hinged leaves that raise to extend the top, these tables often incorporate turned central pedestals, sabre legs, and shallow drawers.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, prized for their rich grain and durability. Hardware typically includes brass castors, brass drawer handles or turned wooden knobs, and dovetail drawer joinery.

Authentic Regency examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction, original oak or pine drawer linings, and hand-turned central columns. The presence of period brass castors and natural surface oxidisation inside the drawers also indicates authenticity.

A Regency Pembroke table functions effectively as an end table beside a sofa, a compact desk in a quiet alcove, or an occasional table in a hallway. The folding side leaves allow the surface area to adjust according to space requirements.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax periodically along the grain. Avoid placing the wood in direct sunlight or near direct heat sources to prevent cracking and timber shrinkage.
