This William IV letter opener or page turner functions as an elegant desk accessory. The piece combines a silver blade with a dark red agate handle, showing traces of original gilding on the metal and minor scuffs alongside clear hallmarks. The silver blade features detailed scrollwork engraving, a shell motif near the base, and an embossed ferrule, while the dark red handle is faceted with a rolled terminal. Measuring 23 cm high by 2 cm wide and 1 cm deep, the item sits comfortably on an office desk or library table. It suits a gentleman's library theme, serving daily correspondence tasks or acting as a decorative paper knife for opening envelopes and turning book pages.

Page turners were functional 19th-century desk accessories used to open untrimmed pages of newly bound books and turn delicate paper leaves without leaving oils from fingers.

During the William IV period, silversmiths frequently combined hallmarked silver or silver-gilt blades with handles carved from natural semi-precious stones, such as agate, or carved mother-of-pearl and bone.

Authentic British silver from the William IV period (18301837) features official silver hallmarks, including the duty mark depicting the profile of King William IV, a lion passant, a town mark, and a date letter.

An antique silver and agate letter opener can be displayed on a leather blotter, styled alongside modern brass desk accessories, or showcased in a decorative tray atop an office desk.

Clean the silver blade gently using a soft silver polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners, while keeping liquids away from the agate handle and joinery to preserve the integrity of the natural stone.
