Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian silver bonbon dish displays an ornate rectangular form with a smooth recessed central basin. Surrounding the centre is an openwork pierced lattice rim, finished with a Rococo scroll border and floral corner reliefs in silver and silver plate. The metal exhibits a polished silver colour with faint surface marks, light scratches, and small spots of tarnish across the base. Four small scrolled feet support the dish underneath while floral motifs decorate each corner on top. The dimensions are 3 cm high by 14 cm wide and 11 cm deep, providing a compact display piece for small confectioneries. Positioned on a sideboard top, this piece fits easily into an English Country House interior setting to hold sweets or small trinkets.

FAQs

Popularised during the nineteenth century, bonbon dishes were crafted to serve small confectioneries, sweetmeats, and candied fruits at formal tea gatherings and dinner parties. They reflected the periods emphasis on elaborate dining etiquette and intricate metalwork.

These dishes were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver. Craftsmen employed techniques such as die-stamping, openwork lattice piercing, chasing, and repousse detailing to form elaborate floral and scroll motifs.

Authentic pieces generally feature clear makers marks, purity hallmarks, or maker trade stamps on the underside or edge. Look for signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-finished piercing and characteristic Victorian decorative elements like scrolls and acanthus leaves.

Small silver dishes serve as functional accents on vanity tables for holding jewellery, on hall consoles for keys, or positioned on coffee tables as catch-all trays to contrast against contemporary surfaces.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a specialized silver polish formulated for fine metalwork. Avoid abrasive sponges, wash carefully in warm soapy water, and dry thoroughly to prevent oxidisation and moisture damage.
