A vinaigrette is a small pocket container popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to hold a small sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or smelling salts, used to mask unpleasant odours or revive someone feeling faint.

These pieces generally combine precious metals such as sterling silver or gold for the mounts, hinges, and internal pierced grilles, paired with decorative glass elements such as cranberry or cobalt glass.

Authenticity is usually verified through hallmarks on the silver components indicating the maker and assay office, combined with period-appropriate glass manufacturing techniques like hand-cutting and rich colouration.

This small decorative object can be displayed inside a glass-fronted cabinet, on a vanity tray, or atop a stack of books on a side table to add a touch of historical detail to a room.

Silver components should be cleaned gently with a specialist microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the underlying metal or delicate glass, which should simply be wiped with a soft, dry cloth.
